Winds Continue on Day 2 of Semaine Olympique Francaise

More great breeze in Hyeres, France for day 2 of Semaine Olympique Francaise. Yesterday the Stars and 49ers were kept ashore on due to the strong winds, whilst the 470 fleets strutted their stuff. Monday’s day 2 delivered more wind and the 470 fleets literally took off.

All change at the top of the 470 Men leaderboard, with Panagiotis Mantis/Pavlos Kagialis (GRE) consolidating their 2,2 from day 1 with a 7,3 today to push up into the lead, whilst the Netherlands’ Lisa Westerhof/Lobke Berkhout remain solid at the front of the 470 Women.

470 Men
Panagiotis Mantis/Pavlos Kagialis (GRE) went into today in second overall and sailed a tidy 7,3 scoreline to leap up to first. Just two points behind are Italy’s Gabrio Zandona/Pietro Zucchetti, with Sven Coster/Kalle Coster (NED) in third.

A great day for Crotia’s Sime Fantela/Igor Marenic yesterday which gave them the overall lead on a double race win delivery was all change today. An OCS in race 4 sees them plummet down the leaderboard to 37th overall. As soon as the race discard kicks in though, be assured they will be back amongst the frontrunners.

From a different angle, a disastrous opener yesterday for reigning World Champions Mat Belcher/Malcolm Page (AUS) after a broken mast in race 2 saw them lose out, was exchanged today for two race wins and a leap up the leaderboard to tenth overall.

470 Women
Another stunning day for Lisa Westerhof/Lobke Berkhout (NED) who extend their points lead adding a 1,2 today to yesterday’s scoreline of 2,1! Chasing hard are the world ranked #2 team of Ai Kondo/Wakako Tabata of Japan with Amanda Clark/Sarah Lihan (USA) in third.

Double 470 World Champions Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout (NED) are back in top form and enjoying the breeze in Hyères.

"This is an important event for us," explained the Dutch pair. "We need to show form to the Dutch Olympic committee. So we want to get that out of the way. That would be great. But it is also very nice to sail in the breeze again and see how we go with that. But our speed is good, we are very happy with that. And we are working on some processes and things are coming together now. That is always easier with wind than with light airs. Today we sailed a 1 and 2 and yesterday a 2 and 1. So that is great. Today was not so easy as yesterday. More shifts less wind. But we discussed the opportunities on board and got the most out of them."

Working their way up the leaderboard are Israel’s Gil Cohen/Vered Bouskila who were the other star performers today securing a 2,1 to move up to eighth overall.
