DAY 4 OF THE ALLIANZ SAILING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023
15 Aug 2023Keiju Okada/Miho Yoshioka (JPN) continued to extend their lead in the Mixed 470 fleet at the Allianz Sailing World Championships in The Hague after the first day of gold fleet racing on Tuesday.
A 2,5,1 leaves them with a 24-point lead over Simon Diesch/Anna Markfort (GER) with a 1,4,18, while Tetsuya Isozaki/Yurie Seki (JPN) drop to third after a 11,6,13.
It was a changeable day starting very grey with moderate wind and rain, with the wind first dropping away and then the clouds clearing to leave a warm sunny afternoon with 8-11 knots, but still with a 3-4 knot tide down the course. After Diesch/Markfort won the first race of the day, Martin Wrigley/Bettine Harris (GBR) led all the way in the next to record their second win of the week with Okada/Yoshioka then winning the third and their third. They look unstoppable in these challenging conditions.
In the silver fleet, Afrodite Zegers/Pim van Vugt (NED) lead from Elena Berta/Bruno Festo (ITA) and Beatriz Gago/Rodolfo Pires (POR). The race wins went to Nia Jerwood/Conor Nicolas (AUS), Berta/Festo and Agnieszka Pawlowska/Bartlomiej Szlija (POL).
The finals series concludes Wednesday with three more races scheduled, though the forecast is for very light winds through the morning. The medal race is scheduled for Thursday.
