The fourth day of racing at the 2023 470 Junior World Championships started early today as the sailors hit the water before 8am. Due to the ominous weather forecast, the start was postponed to 08:30 before the wind had time to increase too much.
Nevertheless, even so early in the morning, strong winds of over 20 knots prevailed. The strong wind presented challenges to both the Race Committee and the sailors with many capsizes whereas some boats even had their masts bent. The youngest and least experienced teams did not sail at all today or returned to shore without completing the competition.
The early finish of the competition day allowed the sailors, after returning to the shore, to take care of their boats, repair broken equipment and rest after a tiring day.
The Israeli U21 duo of Roy Levi and Ariel Gal finished second in both of today’s races closing the gap from the French leaders who chose to follow a more conservative strategy. Nonetheless, it was the Spanish U21 team Neus Ballester Bover and Jaime Wizner who took the fleet by the storm winning both races and climbing from 13th overall to 5th despite having a BFD and a 31st in yesterday’s races. Polish and German teams had a good performance while the strong wind was not in favor of the Norwegian and the Swedish teams. Unlucky for the Turkish, 6th overall,  due to a gear failure resulting in a DNF which placed them some distance from the medals.
After day 4, the leading positions in the overall standings remained unchanged, although the leading French duo of Matisse Pacaud / Lucie de Gennes showed their worst performance during the championship. Tomorrow 3 races are scheduled that will determine the top 10 who will compete for a place on the podium on Sunday’s medal race.
