PATIENCE AND TACTICS REWARDED ON DAY 1 AT 2022 470 JUNIOR WORLDS
16 Aug 2022
Thirty of the world’s top 470 junior talent faced off on day 1 of the 2022 470 Junior World Championship in Tihany, Hungary today, Tuesday 16 August.
The first day of the 470 Junior Worlds started early in the morning with boats launching at 9 o’clock.
The race committee expected a nice morning Easterly wind, but as the fleet arrived at the starting area, the wind dropped and disappeared, so everyone returned to the marina. Shortly before 2 o’clock a Westerly wind built up, and the fleet was sent on the water again, and had one good race in 7-8 knots of wind. During the race a storm started developing along the Northern part of the lake. It changed the wind conditions a little at the final leg of the first race, but it was finished without major changes in the results. The race committee changed the course very quickly and had a nice second race with fresh wind for teh fleet to enjoy. The Oscar flag went up from the start, the average wind being as high as 15 knots. A third race was started two times in a significantly weaker wind, but it was both times abandoned due to the lack of wind. After the second time the AP over A was hoisted, and everyone sailed home as it was already getting close to 6 o’clock.
After the first two races the Austrian team of Donner - Slivon sits in first place, followed by the French Junior European Champions Pacaud - De Gennes and the Türkish Tulcani -Danismed in third place.
The first day was a nice start to get aquainted with the challenging conditions of the lake, and 2 good races are already in the scoreboard.
