A TIME TO SHINE AS THE SEABREEZE LIGHTS UP THE 52 TROFEO PRINCESA SOFIA

05 Apr 2023

A day when the local Embat sea breeze came in on cue at 12-13kts allowed Mallorca’s showcase 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia to complete qualifying series for all classes, allowing tomorrow’s Finals to be contested on schedule to decide who will compete in Saturday’s titles decider.

The Bay of Palma was back to its sparkling best; speed, power and manoeuvres being tested today much more than the ability to read the changing breezes which prevailed through the two opening days.

For the top seeds, the preliminary, qualifying series are often little more than a warm up for the Finals and the medal deciding contests. But with the added pressure of Olympic selection looming as well as the vagaries of the breezes on the first days, it has not all been plain sailing for the big names.

In the 470 Mixed class after 5 races sailed, the German team of Simon DIESCH / Anna MARKFORT lead the fleet, followed by the French duo Camille LECOINTRE / Jeremie MION and the Japanese Keiju OKADA / Miho YOSHIOKA.

The Finals Series for the dinghy classes run Friday with all of the medal deciding races due on Saturday.

The 52 Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar is the first qualifying event for the Sailing World Cup 2023 and will be held from 29 March to 8 April under the joint organisation of the Club Nàutic S'Arenal, the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Real Federación Española de Vela and the Federación Balear de Vela, with the backing of World Sailing and the main Balearic public institutions. It is funded by the European Union Next Generation EU, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency.
