LOCAL 470 HEROES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO SOFIA COMPETITION

This has already been a good year for the Spanish 470 duo Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman. Although 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Xammer and Brugman are from Barcelona, around the Mallorca’s Club Nàutic Arenal they are very much the local heroes, even more so since winning the 2024 470 Mixed World Championship title which was hosted by the club and raced on the Bay of Palma one month ago.

With gusts to over 30kts at times and a big, untidy swell which has been built up by nearly two weeks of strong winds in the Balearica Islands, of the ten Olympic scheduled events only the Formula Kite Men and Women, the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 singlehanders and the redoubtable 470 Mixed were actually able to race and open their accounts on schedule at the 53 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar.

HOW TO FOLLOW THE 53RD TROFEO PRINCESA SOFÍA MALLORCA

Sixty-eight 470 Mixed teams from 26 different nations are back in racing mode on the same waters they competed for the World’s title last month. This is one of the few remaining times when all 10 Olympic events will be racing together in the same bit of water before the biggest event of the four-year cycle, the Olympic Games (Games of the XXXIII Olympiad) this July.

SUNSHINE AND FRESH BREEZES SET TO OPEN 53RD TROFEO PRINCESA SOFÍA MALLORCA BY IBEROSTAR ON MONDAY

After nearly two week of strong winds and unruly seas which have prevailed for the hundreds of teams and Olympic classes sailors who have been training on Mallorca’s Bay of Palma, competitors at the 53 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar look set for a breezy, sunny opening day Monday before winds revert to early Spring thermal breezes.

THE TROFEO PRINCESA SOFÍA MALLORCA BY IBEROSTAR MOVES TOWARDS GENDER PARITY

On International Women's Day, the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar pays tribute to the women of sailing, who are striving to increase female representation at all levels of the sport. The major Olympic class regatta is comprised of almost 40% women in the different departments of the organisation, and has set itself the target of reaching 50% by 2028, following the example of the International Olympic Committee and World Sailing.
