The Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta continues to grow in parallel with the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca. Organised jointly by the Club Náutico Arenal (CNA) and the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa (CMSAP), the event grew out of training camps "but it has evolved to become a major international event which forms part of the itinerary of many Olympic teams," explains Toni Durán, sports director of the CMSAP.

From 9 to 12 March, the event brings together six Olympic sailing classes: the men's 49er and iQFOiL Men, the women's 49er FX and iQFOiL Women, and the 470 Mixed and Nacra 17. These are six of the ten disciplines which will compete for the 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca from 29 March to 8 April aiming for Olympic glory in Paris 2024, next summer.

The teams that are already in Mallorca are taking advantage of the unique opportunity offered by training in almost full-on competition mode. "

On an organisational level we are approach this as a mini Sofia, and as such we are looking for maximum quality both on land and on the water, offering the teams the same spaces that they will have in the Sofia so that they can familiarise themselves with the environment," continues the CMSAP sports director. "There are teams that spend a month preparing in Mallorca, and they appreciate our efforts.”

Dress rehearsal
The organising committee will utilise four regatta areas, one more than in the 2022 edition. It is a substantial operation which involves around fifty staff on the water highlighting the scale and importance that the event has taken on, as Alex Durán points out: "We all see it as a dress rehearsal for the Sofía: the teams use it to continue making progress in their training programmes and we take advantage of it to test all the new features that we will incorporate in the Sofía, such as courses, equipment and material.”

One area will used by the 470 Mixed, two will be shared by the 49er, 49er FX and Nacra 17, and the other will be reserved for both iQFOiL categories, which in this edition will be using Smartmark smart buoys for the first time, "a very interesting new thing that will allow us to reduce the number of boats on the water and speed up the processes of setting up and reconfiguring the race course," says the CMSAP sports director.

With just a few hours to go before the end of the registration period, more than 200 boats and more than 300 sailors have already signed up to compete in the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta. The competition will take place from Friday 10th March until Sunday 12th.
