The 60 international teams are ready to compete in three qualifying races on the opening day of the 470 World Championship in Sdot Yam, Israel. Conditions look great. Blue sky, warm sun, sea temperature of about 26 degrees celsius, and most vital of all, good wind forecast.
For the first two days the fleet is split into two qualifying groups. Three races on Monday, two on Tuesday, then the fleet is re-organised into gold and silver fleets. The most important mission today is to notch up three good results, try to avoid any major mishaps such as a UFD disqualification for starting too early, or tangling up with another boat and ending up in the protest room this evening.
Easier said than done, of course! Everyone will be fighting tooth and nail for every position on the race course.
After last night’s opening ceremony, attended by the President of the State of Israel, Isaac Herzog, and final boat preparations this morning, the teams are ready for competition.
