LOCAL 470 HEROES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO SOFIA COMPETITION

02 Apr 2024

This has already been a good year for the Spanish 470 duo Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman. Although 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Xammer and Brugman are from Barcelona, around the Mallorca’s Club Nàutic Arenal they are very much the local heroes, even more so since winning the 2024 470 Mixed World Championship title which was hosted by the club and raced on the Bay of Palma one month ago.

And so returning to action at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar this week is doubly special but the duo have put their success behind them and are focused on the small details which they say could ensure they deliver Olympic gold in Marseille this summer. Third here last year behind Japan’s winners Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka and Germany’s runners up Luise Wanser and Philipp Autenrieth, Xammar and Brugman would love to leave Mallorca and head for Marseille with the Sofía title also in their pockets….

So Jordi does it feel different being back here as 470 world champions?
“It does not feel any different. That was a very special week in our lives and it is good to be back here but our main goal this year is the Olympics and we just keep on the track, working on what we have to work on. We know what we have to achieve here, what we want to focus on.”

Does being world champions bring higher expectations of yourselves?
“No, not at all, opposite now. Even if we know that the Olympics is the main goal we know that 2024 is already a good year. We have won the worlds and that is a big thing. We know if we just stay focused on our track the year can prove even better.”

And being the local heroes must feel special and give you a boost here?
“We enjoy being here and racing in Spain but it is lovely to feel the support from the local yacht club here in Arenal and obviously it is great to be at home, we don’t feel like local heroes, not at all.”

What are you working on here especially this week?
“We are focusing on Mediterranean summer time conditions already so we are testing a few things here, materials but most of that testing is done so it is the small details, we have a really strong base in every condition. So it is small things now and keeping it all on track.”
