DAY 5 MORNING UPDATE: A BIT WINDIER ON THE FORECAST

28 Oct 2022

More wind is expected for day five, the final day of gold fleet competition at the 470 World Championship in Sdot Yam, Israel.

It was glassy calm this morning and clear skies, which the local experts say are the perfect recipe for the strong northerly sea breeze to build in the afternoon.

Stronger winds should make life a little more straightforward for the teams at the top of the table. All the front runners are confident in their boatspeed and the heavier breeze should remove some of the randomness from the race course.

That’s what the yellow bib wearers from Germany will be hoping, anyway. Luise Wanser & Philipp Autenrieth (GER) have a 7-point buffer over the rapidly rising 21-year-olds, Matisse Pacaud & Lucie de Gennes (FRA), who displayed such composure yesterday with two 3rd places. Most teams endured an up-and-down day on Thursday, including Camille Lecointre & Jérémie Mion (FRA), now down to third overall but only 5 points behind their French teammates.

Behind the front three are many crews desperate to make up ground on the podium, while back in the teens are some hot teams running a bit lukewarm this week, such as Anton Dahlberg & Lovissa Karlsson (SWE) back in 15th. While any realistic prospect of a medal has gone for the Swedes, the recently crowned European Champions will still be keen to fight for a place in tomorrow’s decider, the 10-boat medal race.

First start today is set for 1300 hours. For live tracking and live broadcast of the racing, go here: https://www.sport5.co.il/articles.aspx?FolderID=6045&docID=418043
