ANOTHER CHALLENGING DAY AT 470 JUNIOR WORLDS, LEADERS STRENGTHENED THEIR LEAD.

05 Jul 2019

After yesterday’s exciting sailing in strong bora wind, lighter sea breeze of around eight knots filled the Piran bay today, with the wind dropping later in the afternoon. The race officer Bojan Gale decided for two more races for each of the groups - gold, silver and women.

The first start was scheduled for 13:30, after the sea breeze had already settled. As we’re already used in this kind of conditions, sailing further out after the start to the left side towards the middle of the bay, proves to be the winning strategy. Only a couple of boats still decided to try to beat the pattern and sailed right toward the coast, unfortunately the decision didn’t bring them much luck.

The closer we are to the finish of this exciting championship, the more hot blood there is at the starting line. Although the first start attempts were normally made on Papa flag, the race committee had to display the black flag a couple of times due to many boats crossing the line ahead of time, causing a general recall.

Despite touching the pin end boat in the first race and taking the penalty, which put them at the back of the starting line, the ITA 757 proved again how keen and highly experienced sailors they are, and finished the race on 8th place (which is their discard). They won the second today’s race and strengthened their leading position with 16 points total.  German team GER 22 Daniel Göttlich and Linus Klasen is second with 41 points and French FRA 10 Alexandre Demange and Paco Lepoutre third with 60 points. If things don’t change dramatically in the last race of the final series, gold and silver medals will be decided before entring the medal race on Sunday. The mixed team ITA 54 Maria Vittoria Marcesini and Bruno Festo, holding third position in the last days, scored 18 and 25 (which is now their discard) and are now sixth with a total of 69 points. Only three places and 6 points behind, and on the overall 9th, is another Italian mixed team, ITA 75 Andrea Totis and Aloce Linussi with a total of 75 points, making it an interesting battle for the gold medal on Sunday. The third ranking mixed team after today’s racing is still POL 13 Seweryn Wysokinski and Hanna Dzik, on an overall 16th place with 95 points.

In the women fleet the leading German team GER 69 Luise and Helena Wanser scored two more wins today and strengthened their leading position even more, with 19 points in total. On second place are now FRA 19 Paola Amar and Marine Riou (yesterday third) with 30 points and on third GER 20 Theres Dahnke and Birte Winkel with 34 points.

If the wind models prove to be right, we’re expecting a new wind direction in our bay tomorrow, this time the southerly.

Tomorrow’s start is again scheduled for 13:30 with 12:00 BIBs ceremony and races 9 & 10 winners prize giving.
