Thun - Switzerland

You may have heard about Switzerland, the country where watches and chocolate come from or about Switzerland where milk and honey flows...

Since the Alinghi Victory in the America’s Cup 2003, Switzerland also is known as a nation of sailors and as a promoter of important sailing events.

The Lake of Thun and its surroundings are without doubt among the most beautiful places in Switzerland. Thun, the famous alpine town, has many more attractions to offer than the Lake alone, with its numerous water sport facilities. Anyone looking for other sporting activities will find a perfect setting for mountain sports, hiking, tennis, golf and much more. The town itself is also very much worth a visit. The castle dating from the Middle Ages and the picturesque old town, the parks and promenades, and the lake with the Alps in the background, form the backdrop for Switzerland's tenth-largest town. Thun has something to suit everyone's taste, for young and old.

Around the Lake of Thun there is an abundance of various types of accommodation, ranging from hotels, pensions, apartments, to camp sites, where you will enjoy the local hospitality and ambience...

Thunersee-Yachtclub

The Thunersee-Yachtclub (TYC), with its headquaters in Thun, was founded in 1920 as the first sailing club in the canton of Berne. It has the Bernese official colours in its pennants and, with its roughly 700 members, is one of the bigger and more active clubs in the country. The TYC has so far become home to the Olympic classes Starboat, Finn, and 470s', the junior classes and an impressive number of other classes. Due to its long tradition, the TYC sees itself as a sports club which, among other things, hosts at least one Swiss Championship per year, but also several international races and championships. The Race Committee, organised by the Thunersee-Yachtclub, has a great deal of experience with the sometimes demanding conditions on Lake Thun. Thanks to this Committee’s know-how, we are confident that the races will be challenging and fair to all competitors.

Our spacious club facilities at the lower end of Lake Thun offer an ideal meeting point for the sporting competitors on the water, as well as a sociable and cooperative club life onshore. The TYC has a marina with 4 slip facilities, a big boat park and a clubhouse, which was renovated in spring 2001, and has excellent amenities, including a restaurant, in which the members, their guests and the regatta crews are always very welcome.

You’ll find more Information about the activities on the internet: www.thunersee-yachtclub.ch

Weather and Climate

The weather and climate conditions in the Lake Thun area are pleasant without extreme variation of temperatures. During the summer months of July and August the average day-time temperatures lie between 16 and 27 °C.

When the weather is good there will be a thermic wind of about Beaufort force 2 - 4 on Lake of Thun between 01:00 and 05:00 p.m. After a thunderstorm there are usually winds coming down from Interlaken of about Beaufort force 5 - 6. When the weather is bad, conditions can become very challenging.

Our Vision

Here in the magnificent mountainous surroundings of Lake Thun, you can sail to your heart’s content and relax in our comfortable clubhouse. An attractive supporting programme and an ample supply of spectator boats will ensure that your family’s needs are also catered for. We envisage about 7 - 10 nations at the start of the 470 Master World Cup 2005. Help us to bring this vision to life! The organisation is already in place. We look forward to seeing you soon on the waters of Lake Thun!
