THE TROFEO PRINCESA SOFIA IBEROSTAR REACHES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN THE OLYMPIC SAILING ELITE08 Feb 2019
The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Iberostar celebrates this year its 50th anniversary in the elite of Olympic sailing in a record edition, to be held in Majorcan waters from 29th March to 6th April, organised by Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Balearic and Spanish federations.
The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Iberostar is one of the most important Olympic classes’ regattas in the world and the event with the highest participation. Every year, around one thousand sailors representing 50 to 60 nations meet in Mallorca to take part in this event.
“We are the sailors’ event, one of the preferred regattas. For the quality of its organisation, the infrastructures, the weather and the wind and wave conditions in the bay of Palma as well as for the hospitality of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Iberostar organising team who have been working hard and passionately for many years. We allow ourselves to include in this family, the Royal family, so involved in our sport and our island”, assured Ferran Muniesa, the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Iberostar Event Manager.
The presentation act was also attended by three members of the Spanish Olympic team: Silvia Mas, Jordi Xammar and Nico Rodríguez, who have recently won the Gold medal at the World Cup Series de Miami.
Xammar declared that this last victory shows “they are working on the right direction”, while his crew Rodríguez affirmed their goal is an Olympic medal in Tokyo 2020.
Silvia Mas pointed out that the mixed teams are an “excellent idea” because it means “a challenge for sailors and sailors love challenges”.
