Split Olympic Sailing Week - Report

Yesterday's final day of racing in Split, Croatia was an epic conclusion to four scheduled race days, which became two! The perfect conditions, a 17 knot southeasterly, produced some very happy sailors “flying” around course area Bravo.

The 470 fleet was led from the outset by the Slovenina sailors. Mitja Mikulin and Sebastian Princic and teammates Tina Mrak and Teja Cerne were jostling for the first and second places throughout the event and the two teams managed to claim all the race victories between them and claim first and second respectively.

The first two scheduled race days produced no wind, so a great job was undertaken by the Race Committee to get 6 races completed on Saturday and Sunday. Reflecting on the challenging conditions, Race Director Karlo Kuret said, “At the end we have to be satisfied after two days in a row with no wind at all. Finally the southeasterly wind started and it was quite easy to produce races in the last two days. No wind, no race. The Organizing Committee has done a great job and we have to be pleased with SOSW 2010. Local top sailors have shown once again that they are among the best sailors in Olympic dinghies.”

Currently holding a ranking of 65, Mitja Mikulin and Sebastian Princic, have been making steady progress up the World Rankings. A young team, they completed their last year in the junior championships in 2009, with an eighth at the 470 Junior European Championships and fourteenth at the 2009 470 Junior World Championships.

More often found helming their own 470s with other crew, Tina Mrak and Teja Cerne partnered up at Split – and together achieved one of their best results a second place. Next stop for this pair is Princess Sofia Week in Palma. Commenting on their achievement, Teja Cerne said, “We were sailing wery well over the past two days and I'm very pleased with second place overall.”

Completing the Slovenian line-up in third was Dylan Tidd and Nejc Dolinsek. Nejc Dolinsek has more recently been competing with Ren Kaligaric, so it will be interesting to see how this new pairing performs over the coming season.
