Semana Brasileira de Vela 2011 Report

The first day of racing at Semana Brasileira de Vela 2011, one of Brazil's main events for Olympic Classes, being hosted by the Iate Clube de Santa Catarina in Florianopolis saw many of the nation's hottest young 470 stars battling for places. A south-easterly of 8-12 knots dominated for the first race of the day, before swinging round to to south and increasing with gusts up to 20 knots – accompanied by significant rainfall.

The men's and women's teams are sailing within one fleet, and top of the leaderboard after day 1 was Alexander Paradeda and Barnardo Arndt. Following close in second are the new young stars and top ranked Brazilian women's 470 team of Martine Grael with 2008 Olympic bronze medal crew Isabel Swan, who sit at #14 on the ISAF Sailing World Rankings. Rounding out the top three is Enrique Duarte Haddad and Nicolas de Castro.

There are eight 470's contesting the Championship and racing continues through until 27 February 2011.
