Perfect Day for Belcher and Page
An outstanding opening scoreline of three bullets for Australians Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page puts them tidily at the front of the 81-boat men's 470 fleet in Kieler Woche.
Renowned coach of the Australian Olympic Team, Victor Kovalenko was beaming from ear to ear on the dockside with his protegees performance at the start of Kieler Woche on Saturday 19 June.
"I am very happy that they became the members of 'Three Bullets Club', the sailors who won three races in one day at a Sailing World Cup event, Euros, Worlds or the Games. It is indication of top level skills in our sport."
Mat Belcher came away from the day with the coolness of a professional, saying, “It’s a long regatta and we have formidable competition at the front of the fleet. An 81-boat fleet is challenging and for five other teams three single-digit scores for the day it is a clear indication that other teams are sailing at the top of their game.”
In second place in the 470 Men are Panagiotis Mantis and Paul Kagialis (GRE), with Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic (CRO) in third.
Back racing on the Olympic trail again Sarah Ayton of Great Britain has recently teamed up with experienced 470 crew Saskia Clark and opened their account in Kiel with a four point lead from Henriette Koch and Lene Sommer of Denmark. Local Kiel sailors Annina Wagner and Marlene Steinherr (GER) hold third.
After a great opening day on Saturday 19 June, there was no racing in the 470 fleets on Sunday 20 June despite the efforts of the race committee; the wind was just not stable enough.
