ALL EVENT INFORMATION

The 470 Class makes a welcome return to Bulgaria after last visiting in 2015 for the 470 Junior European Championships. Many of the young faces racing back then have racked up a Rio 2016 Olympic appearance and established themselves as proven front runners in the senior racing circuit.

The fleet also counts plenty of talent from the Rio 2016 Games, alongside reigning 470 World and European Champions, and lots of young stars from the 470 junior fleets. With the first shot at Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification fast approaching, at the Hempel Sailing World Championships in August, teams are keen to lay down their marker in the fleet pecking order and assert themselves high in contention to secure one of the coveted Olympic Qualification places.

The 2018 470 European Championship formally got underway at tonight’s Opening ceremony held at the Sea Garden, with sailors welcomed alongside local dignatries, coaches, race officials and a team of volunteers. Dimitris Dimou, President of the International 470 Class, welcomed sailors and wished everyone a fantastic week of racing, before declaring the European Championship open. Bulgarian hospitality was next on the programme with a display of traditional folk dancing, followed by a cocktail reception overlooking the water.

Friday 18 May is the final day of registration and measurement and the practice race opportunity. Racing starts on Saturday 19 May, with an 11 race series through until Wednesday 23 May, from which the top ten advance to the podium deciding medal race on Thursday 24 May. Forecasts are pitching the breeze towards the strong end of the scale, perfect race track conditions for 470 sailors.
