Medals Awarded in Hyeres

With Spain and France having already secured the Gold Medals on the penultimate day of racing, Friday was all about the Silver and Bronze and the teams moving themselves up the top 10 leaderboard.

In the 470 Men gold medallists, Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos (FRA) worked their way to a third overall, just behind teammates and Olympian contenders Nicolas Charbonnier and Jeremie Mion (FRA) who took the silver medal. Coming in third with a second place finish in the Medal Racer were Spain's Onan Barreiros and Aaron Sarmiento (ESP), who managed to hold their closest contenders the Croaians Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic off their tail.

In the ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings, Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos knock Mat Belcher and Malcolm Page (AUS) off the top spot. In third overall are Stuart Mcnay and Graham Biehl. ISAF World Cup Standings CLICK HERE

Commented Barreiros, “All the best are here and we have learned from them. We were able to improve day by day, wave by wave!”

In the women's 470, Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos (ESP) who had started the Medal race with a Gold in the pocket, took it all on the water again with a first in the Medal Race. Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (GBR) improved to second position overall to walk away with the silver in front of team mates Penny Clark and Katrina Hughes (GBR).

As a new pairing Mills and Clark were pleased with their result. “We’ve made some massive gains forward since Palma, particularly on our starting and upwind communications and you can see the difference,” Mills explained. “The result is great for us as well as just knowing in ourselves that we’ve got better.”

“I think having two teams on the podium is maybe unheard of for British 470 women’s sailing,” Saskia Clark added, “so it’s a really exciting place for the squad and we’ll hopefully keep pushing forward together through until next summer."
