Medals Awarded at Princess Sofia Trophy
An interesting event for the Princess Sofia with a range of conditions on offer from the extreme, resulting in no racing for the 470's on Tuesday, to more benign conditions and postponements. However, this only served to put the sailors through their paces and add to the challenge of the event.
A close battle was seen in the 41 -boat 470 women fleet, with the front end challenge between Italian team Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol and French team Ingrid Petitjean and Nadège Douroux. After a fairly lacklustre opening race where they finished in 22, the French pair really pushed to gain an advantage but just couldn't quite outpace the Italians. Ultimately ti was Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol who were awarded the gold medal. Petitjean was happy with the result but commented, "it is a shame to have finished at one step from victory." In the bronze medal place was another French team of Emmanuelle Rol and Hélène Defrance.
Victory in the medal race went to the bronze medallist at the 2008 Olympics, Fernanda Oliviera sailing with her new crew Ana Luisa Barbachan. The Olympic bronze medal crew Isabel Swan has partnered up with Martine Grael and put in a result of 22 in Palma. Martine carries the reputation of winning the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in the 420 dinghy, as well as being daughter of the renowned Torben Grael, and so has quite a reputation to deliver.

In the 99-boat strong 470 Men fleet, overall victory went to French sailors Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos with a comfortable 18 point advantage over the second placed sailors Gideon Kliger and Eran Sela (ISR). A significant move up for Leboucher and Garos who finished eighth here last year. The Israeli pair held the advantage in the early part of the event, and will be pleased with their result, but no doubt Kliger would have preferred to improve on the silver medal from last year's event rather than equal it. Their victory in the medal race was the boost needed to secure the Spanish team of Onán Barreiros and Aarón Sarmiento the bronze medal and improve on their sixth place from last year.
Pay attention to a particularly young team who made their third appearance here in Palma. In 2009 they finished in 48, in 2008 in 23 and this year they placed in fifth overall. After an outstanding 2009 in the 470 men junior fleet (under 21), including victory at both the 2009 470 Junior World Championships and 470 Junior European Championships, the pairing of Sofian Bouvet and Jeremie Mion are proving a real challenge to some of the more seasoned 470 crews. For Bouvet and Mion, the Princess Sofia Trophy marks a career best performance on the ISAF World Cup circuit.
