Japan Takes Lead In 470 Women in Hyeres

Each race counts in Hyères! The 2010 SOF Hyères – Toulon Provence Méditerranée, fourth event in the ISAF Sailing Wold Cup circuit, has reached the half way mark, although the programme is well behind schedule with only a few races sailed in each event.

Racing started and stopped a few times today, before the sailors were sent back to shore to wait for the thermal wind to settle. It was close to 1400 hours when a 10 knots westerly breeze finally gave any hope of racing. Unfortunately, it didn’t stay long and was gone three hours later. There was just enough time to run at least one race for all events.

In the 470 Men, the top top three have increased their lead, with Nicolas Charbonnier and Baptiste Meyer (FRA) on equal points with Mantis/Kagialis (GRE), but leading on countback. Anton Dahlberg and Sebastian Ostling have nipped up to third overall, after winning today's race 3, and are only one point adrift of the lading two. There is then a ten points margin to the fourth placed Onan Barreiros and Aaron Sarmiento (ESP). The men are sailing a split fleet series and so far six different crews have won each of the three races. A massive depth of talent. Tomorrow the men's fleet will be split into the final series fleets.

In the 44 boat women's fleet, the overall lead has transferred to the Japanese tema of Ai Kondo and Wakako Tabata after they won today’s race 2, which combined with their fourth place in yesterday's opening race has pushed them to the front. Mixed fortunes though, as whilst Victoria Jurczok and Josephine Bach (GER) have moved into second place with their posting of 7 in race 2 today, down goes Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie (NZL) from that spot after finishing seventeenth. The race 1 leaders Gil Cohen and Dana Mamriev (ISR) did not fair so well in today's tricky condtions and a result of 14, has pushed them down to third. The Israelis are on equal points with Emmanuelle Rol and Helen Defrance (FRA) who are in fourth, but hold the third placed position on countback.
