Japan Achieves 470 Men and Women Victory at Asian Games

Japan did the double in the men's and women's 470 events at the 2010 Asian Games – stunning result. Taking place from 10-21 November from the Bay Guangdong Ocean Sports Training Centre (GOSTC), Shanwei, China, both fleets raced a twelve race series.

Ai Kondo and Wakako Tabata swept to victory in the women's fleet, posting ten race wins from the twelve race series. This team certainly were the ones to watch as the top placed Asian team on the ISAF Sailing World Rankings at #9 and with a string of top 10 places to their credit from all their 2010 appearances, including the 470 World Championships and ISAF Sailing World Cup events. The silver medal went to Liping Cai and Yang Gao (CHN) with Dawn Xiaodan Liu and Siobhan Shiu Wun Tam (SIN) the bronze.

Ryunosuke Harada and Yuugo Yoshida won gold in the men's event with a scoreline of top three results from the 12 race series, including 6 race wins. Chasing hard were Weidong Wang and Daokun Deng (CHN) who were the only other team to secure race wins – the other 6! - and with it the silver medal. Korea's Daeyoung Kim and Sungahn Jung (KOR) put in a fantastic performance, and whilst they will be disappointed not to have defended Korea's 2006 Asian Games title, will be pleased with their bronze medal. Teams from Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and Pakistan were also in the men's 470 fleet.

Singapore achieved the same feat in the two 420 events. Justin Liu and Sherman Cheng (SIN) won the men's gold medal whilst Rachel Lee and Cecilia Low took the women's title.
