ISAF Makes Provisional Decision on Olympic Programme

At Friday's meeting of the ISAF Council in Athens, Greece, the “provisional” events slate which will be considered for inclusion at the 2016 Olympic Games was put to Council on a recommendation from the Events Committee. Council approved the following ”provisional” slate on a vote of 19 in favour, 16 against – so a close run outcome:

Men's Board or kite board - evaluation of equipment
Women's board or kite board - evaluation of equipment
Men's one person dinghy - Laser
Women's one person dinghy - Laser radial
Men's 2nd one person dinghy - Finn
Men's skiff - 49er
Women's skiff - evaluation of equipment
Women's keelboat - Elliott 6m
Mixed multihull - evaluation of equipment
Mixed two person dinghy (spinnaker) - 470

In order to enable full consultation and feedback in the form of submissions from all the ISAF Member National Authorities, ISAF Committees and Classes, this decision is “provisional” with the final decision to be made at the ISAF Council Meeting in May 2011.

In May 2011, the ISAF Council will also determine which are the “Core Events” which may pre-selected for several Olympics to ensure some continuity and stability on the Olympic Programme and the “Speciality Events” which may change each Olympic Games.

Commented 470 Class President Stanislav Kassarov, “This is an interesting time for sailing. The 470 Class will now be evaluating the best interests of our sailors in the context of the best interests of sailing at the Olympic Games."
