GIACOMO FERRARI/GIULIO CALABRO (ITA) SECURED GOLD IN 2019 470 JUNIOR WORLDS

06 Jul 2019

So far, we were really lucky with the wind conditions in the Piran bay in front of Portorož on the Slovenian coast. We had it all - the light sea breeze, strong bora wind with big waves and a new wind direction today - the southerly. Something for everyone - as we could only hope for at the event of this level - the conditions giving all teams fair chances to show their best.

Today again we had to wait for the wind to fill the bay before the fleet was sent ashore. This time, the racing course was facing south, with the wind slightly shifting to the left during the race. To make things right, the race committee changed the position of the second upwind mark in the outer loop for the gold and silver groups. The first start for gold fleet for men & mixed fleet was again exciting, followed by general recall and clear second attempt under black flag.

Italian sailors ITA 757 Giacomo Ferrari and Giulio Calabro sailed their own race today and have secured the title with a total score of 17 points. The difference from the second team is now 27 points, impossible to reverse in the Medal Race, so the Italians only have to finish this race to win the gold medal.

Giacomo Ferrari before today’s racing: “For us this was a good championship, we managed to secure a couple of points between us and the second team, we already won the championship before the medal race, so of course we’re happy. We trained a lot before this championship, we’re preparing for the worlds in Enoshima next month and for the test event, we’re fully in our campaign and we want to continue like this.”

The German team GER 22, Daniel Göttlich and Linus Klasen finished third today and remains in second place with 44 total points, while the French team FRA 10 Alexandre Demange and Paco Lepoutre finished second today and remain on third overall with 62 points. They can only reach the silver medal if they win the Medal Race and the Germans finish 10th. ITA 54 Maria Vittoria Marcesini and Bruno Festo are still leading the mixed fleet on 8th overall with 80 points, closely followed by ITA 75 Andrea Totis and Alice Linussi with a total of 92 points only one place behind. Gold and silver medals are secured for these teams and mathematically there is still a chance to reverse the order. The third mixed team is POL 13 Seweryn Wysokinski and Hanna Dzik, still on an overall 16th place with 115 points.

In the women’s fleet the leading German team GER 69 Luise and Helena Wanser scored another win today and are firmly in the lead with 20 total points, followed by FRA 19 Paola Amar and Marine Riou with 33 points and by GER 20 Theres Dahnke and Birte Winkel with 36 points on third.

Luise Wanser: “We have really nice racing here, we really enjoyed Portorož, it’s a lovely place, Slovenia is a lovely country, people are so friendly, the water is so warm and we enjoy summer time here so much. The wind was our favourite - the light wind, one day the wind was strong, but we managed quite well and survived, and today was just fun, even with the pumping. For tomorrow we have a gap to the second and the third, but we would get a lot of points, 24, if we finish last, so let’s see, it’s never finished, we still must fight until the finish line. We’re going there a bit easier, we want to sail our own race, keeping attention.”

We’re expecting a weather change tomorrow, with possible rain in the afternoon, so if all goes well and weather permits the bibs ceremony will be held at 9:30 am, followed by the last two races for the gold (places 11.-27.) and silver group; the medal race for girls is scheduled for 12:00 and the medal race for men and mixed teams for 12:45.
