FRENCH TEAMS HEADLINING GAES CHRISTMAS RACE IN PALAMOS

19 Dec 2014

The world's top 470 fleets are currently split between GAES Christmas Race in Palamos, Spain and the 2014 Copa Brazil de Vela in Brazil. A tough choice for 470 teams as to where to compete at this time of year, with the ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne also wrapping up on 14 December giving no option for those teams to head on over to either Spain or Brazil.

470 Men and 470 Women teams from fifteen nations are in Palamos - Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine - for five days of racing, which was supposed to kick off on Thursday, but a lack of wind kept teams ashore.

Two races on Friday got the show on the road in a light 6-8 knot breeze.

470 Men
Nicolas Charbonnier/Nicolas Le Berre, the 2013 470 European silver medallists, knocked out a 1,2 score to lead over Ukraine's Borys Shvets/Pavlo Matsuyev who won the day's second race. In third are the young gun pairing of Guillaume Pirouelle/Valentin Sipan (FRA), who stepped up to the 470 Class a couple of years ago, having dominated in the 420 fleet.

A real mix behind of Olympians, established 470 teams and new talent to the 470 fleet, so the stage is set for some spectacular racing to unfold over the next two days.

470 Women
The 2014 470 Junior World Champions, Maelenn Lemaitre/Aloise Retornaz (FRA) have seized the lead in the twenty-one boat 470 Women fleet with a 2,2 scorecard over Spain's Marina Gallego/Fátima Reyes who sit just one point behind. In 3rd are Spain's Sofia Toro/Laura Sarasola.

The opening race win went to Agueda Suria Palop/Nora Brugman Cabot (ESP), but they followed up with a UFD penalty score which has knocked them back to 10th overall. The discard kicks in after race 5, so the leaderboard is likely to shuffle up a bit on Saturday.

Two more days of fleet racing are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, with the medal races on Monday 22 December.
