FRA AND ISR WIN EUROPEAN 470 TITLES; NZL TAKE OPEN TITLE

08 May 2021

The Men’s, Women’s and Mixed fleets each sailed their Medal Race on Friday 7 May, the final day of competition

At the beginning of the final day, Kevin Peponnet & Jeremie Mion (FRA) led the way in the Men’s fleet, with their compatriots Camille Lecointre & Aloise Retornaz topping the Women’s fleet. In the Mixed fleet, Nitai Hasson & Saar Tamir (ISR) took a healthy points lead into the final showdown.

An exciting Mixed Medal Race started the day off. Nikolaos Brilakis & Rafailina Klonaridou (GRE) won the Medal Race to secure a seventh-placed finish overall, with Daniel Göttlich & Anna Markfort (GER) finishing second for overall fifth.

The three leading teams at the beginning of the day kept their places in the final standings. Hasson & Tamir held on to the gold medal, and were joined on the podium by silver medallists Theres Dahnke & Matti Cipra (GER), and bronze medallists Vita Heathcote and Ryan Orr (GBR).

For two teams in the Women’s Medal Race, their regatta was unfortunately over as the race began. Both Silvia Mas & Patricia Cantero (ESP) and Ariadne-Paraskevi Spanaki & Emilia Tsoulfa (GRE) were adjudged to have crossed the starting line too early and were given the maximum points as OCS. For the Greeks, this meant they could finish no higher than 10th, and for the Spaniards, it ruled out their chances of winning a medal - the 2021 world champions had started the race in second place overall.

Lecointre & Retornaz capped off their fine form throughout the week with Medal Race victory, securing gold and defending their 2019 title in style. Hannah Mills & Eilidh McIntyre (GBR) fought back from fourth to second to take silver, while Linda Fahrni & Maja Siegenthaler (SUI) won bronze.

An eventful Medal Race in the Men’s fleet saw many of the frontrunners finish at the back of the fleet. Leading overall before the race, Peponnet & Mion crossed the line in ninth place; the last team to finish the race after Deniz & Ates Cinar (TUR) were ruled as OCS. This allowed the New Zealand duo of Paul Snow-Hansen & Daniel Willcox, who had looked strong throughout the regatta, to claim the Open title with a fourth-placed Medal Race finish. The French, however, had enough of a points advantage to take Open silver and the European title. Jordi Xammar & Nicolas Rodriguez (ESP) completed the Open podium with bronze (European silver), while Anton Dahlberg & Fredrik Bergström (SWE) took European bronze.
