The 2019 470 South American Championship started on a sunny afternoon on Thursday, March 14th at the Jangadeiros Club in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The competition began with the opening ceremony around noon at Club’s premises. Commodore Pedro Pesce, Deputy Administrative Commodore Luiz Fernando Schramm, Vice-Commodore of Sports, Mario Dubeux, and Deputy Commodore of Development and Marketing, Alexandre Gadret, along with the sailors, technicians and guests attended the ceremony.

"It was a windy day with western winds and substantial swifts that made the race difficult. This is also reflected in the results and the final positions of the sailors, " argued Lucas Mazim, coach of the athletes Fernanda Oliveira and Ana Barbachan.

After a meeting with the Race Committee, the sailors left for the Tristeza streak, where the first three races of the day were held. The wind oscillated between 8 and 12 knots, being one of the main factors to intensify the competition between teams. With two wins in three races, Geison Mendes and Gustavo Thiesen lead the way on the first day of the South American Championship, followed by Ricardo Paranhos/ Rodolfo Streibel (2,4,1). Fernanda Oliveira/Ana Barbachan, female duo of the Jangadeiros' Club, are in the third place of the general classification.
