Day 4 at Princess Sofia Trophy

After a mixed range of conditions, and over halfway through the competition, there are some new faces leading the fleets as the event goes into the penultimate day.

Thursday will be the final chance to improve positions as the sailors jostle to make it to the final 10 boat Medal Race.

The weather conditions divided the day into two halves. The morning began with a 15 knot north-westerly but it dropped causing a break in racing. The fleets were sent out again later in the afternoon to race in an 8 knot westerly.

Late night finishes were the order of the day as the Race Committee was challenged to deliver three races each in the 470 men's and women's fleets.

470 Women

The leading team in the Women’s 470 fleet are Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol from Italy followed by French sailors, Ingrid Petitjean and Nadège Douroux who scored 1,2,2 in the days racing. Petitjean said “It was a good day of racing with interesting weather conditions, three races, three winds”.

 470 Men

Israeli team Gideon Kliger and Eran Sela celebrated Gideon’s 30th birthday, taking the lead in Men’s 470. “We had a bad start in the second race” said Eran, while Gideon added “It was the worst result possible crossing the finishing line in 34th position.” But with their discard they open up a four point lead over the French pair Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos with the Australian’s Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page back in the mix.
