Croatia and Greece Win Athens Eurolymp

The ISAF Grade 2 Athens Eurolymp Week 2010, which concluded yesterday after four days of racing, turned out to be a predominantly light wind event in the Saronic Gulf.

Taking place from from 11-14 March 2010, Athens, Greece, the 470 men and women fleet hosted 25 entries racing as a single fleet. The 470 men represented the largest multi-crewed dinghy entries, with a total of 20 entries, and the second largest entry of the Olympic classes racing in Athens, Greece. The women's entries saw 5 crews racing.

Never in question, from their opening two bullets, was the supremacy shown by Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic (CRO) who won the event in style with a very safe 9 point margin. A result you would expect from the reigning 470 World Champions. Chasing hard, but still at a distance were George Vasilas and Andreas Papadopoulos (GRE) and Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis (GRE), last year's winners, who finished on equal points but placed second and third respectively after countback.

Over in the women's fleet, it was another Croatian success story, with Enia Nincevic and Romana Zupan (CRO) taking overall victory. The pair were also the only women's boat to make the cut to the ten-boat Medal race. Nincevic and Zupan placed tenth overall across the two fleets. Coming in second in the women's were Virginia Kravariotti and Olga Tsigaridi (GRE), with Danezi Altani and Alina Stratigiou (GRE) in bronze position.
