WILMOT and PAGE Take Lead On Day Two In Men's 470

Australia's world #1 crew Nathan WILMOT and Malcolm PAGE posted two third-place finishes on the second day of racing in the Men's 470 fleet to pull a point ahead of the French masters of light air Nicolas CHARBONNIER and Olivier BAUSSET.
Although Nathan WILMOT and Malcolm PAGE (AUS) did not post the best performances of the day, it was enough to move them up in the rankings.
Also showing composure in the light and shifty air were Athens silver medallists Nick ROGERS and Joe GLANFIELD (GBR), with a first and fourth and Anton DAHLBERG and Sebastian OSTLING (SWE) with a second a fifth.
Said PAGE about today's racing conditions, which got underway after a slight delay ashore while the breeze filled in from the SE at approximately six knots. “The wind was light, shifty, choppy, and tricky. There were not many favoured sides. It's going to be a tough regatta."
After a close windward mark rounding in the third race of the series, ROGERS and GLANFIELD passed Gabrio ZANDONA and Andrea TRANI (ITA) on the first run and defended their position throughout the remainder of the race. The Brazilians and the Americans were OCS during the third race of the series and the Croatians were OCS in the fourth race.
After an eighth in the first race, Nicolas CHARBONNIER and Olivier BAUSSET trounced the fleet in the second and won by nearly 40 seconds. "We had a good start and also had good speed downwind. Everything fits together perfectly for us, even the communication between us," explained CHARBONNIER.
While CHARBONNIER and BAUSSET cruised to the finish line with brothers Sven COSTER and Kalle COSTER (NED) trailing them, the rest of the fleet converged at the final mark. There was a lot of yelling during the approach to the final gate as teams gybed and tried to keep their chutes full. By playing the middle on the run and by executing well timed gybes, ZANDONA and TRANI were able to scoop seven boats, and make one of the largest point gains of the day. They posted a seventh in the fourth race.
Overall, the Aussies lead on 17 points, just one ahead of the French crew. Onan BARREIROS and Aaron SARMIENTO (ESP), ranked #12 in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, are upsetting the form book in third place overall. In the high pressure environment of the Games, BARREIROS said a key aspect of the team’s performance has been focusing on satying relaxed. “I kept telling myself to enjoy and don’t be nervous in this competition. Eventually, we placed third overall today. We always believe that enjoying the competition is more important, and it is the key to winning in the Olympics."
The 470s continue their Opening Series with races 5 and 6 and course area A on Wednesday.
