EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2021 - CHANGES TO CLASS RULES
20 Dec 2021The 2021 Extraordinary General Assembly meeting concluded on Sunday December 19th in an online Zoom session with important class rule changes approved.
After lengthy discussions, the 470 Class General Assembly decided to change the way Racing Rule 42 is handled at our events, moving the wind speed limit for Oscar Flag back to 10 knots. The other submissions to ban or limit upwind kinetics were rejected, as it was strongly felt that kinetics is an integral part of 470 sailing and the increase in the wind speed limit is probably sufficient to limit the extreme form of crew kinetics seen in recent years.
On the purely technical side, the re-drafted rules for the centreboard pivot and the electronic compass were approved. This was done in order to improve their clarity and to protect the class from unwanted developments.
The approved submissions together with the one approved last March about the control of the jib head, are now in the hands of World Sailing, which is the body giving the final approval. Target effective date is February 1st, 2022.
The draft minutes will be posted soon on the class website.
