470 Extends Support to Youth Sailing

The funding available to young sailors in the 470 Class has just been increased thanks to the generosity of Jean-Claude Cornu, son of the 470 designer and famous former 470 sailor, through the André Cornu Grant.

Additional financial support is being provided through the the André Cornu Grant to the 470 Junior European Championship, taking place this year from 12-20 August in La Rochelle, France. The grant will provide vital financial support of up to EUR1,000 per crew to the top placed boys and girls teams at the 470 Junior Europeans, who also competed at the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in the 420 class.

The connection with the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF Youth World Championships is important as the natural step for many of the young sailors in the 420 is to move onto the 470 Class. This grant will help make that transition easier from a financial perspective, provide them with a boost to their 470 programme and recognize the commitment of those sailors as they progress their sailing careers.

The top placed crew in each fleet, if the same crew as at the ISAF Youth Worlds will be awarded EUR1,000 and if either of the crew members have changed the grant will be EUR700.

The 470 Class also offers a similar grant to the winners of the 420 Girls and 420 Boys events at the preceding ISAF Volvo Youth Sailing World Championships who choose to compete at either the 470 Junior World Championships or the 470 World Championships.
