If the organizer had the power to write a script for today’s final racing day, it would probably look a lot like what the weather conditions offered us on the Slovenian coast in the Piran bay in front of Portorož.
So far, we were really lucky with the wind conditions in the Piran bay in front of Portorož on the Slovenian coast. We had it all - the light sea breeze, strong bora wind with big waves and a new wind direction today - the southerly. Something for everyone - as we could only hope for at the event of this level - the conditions giving all teams fair chances to show their best.
After yesterday’s exciting sailing in strong bora wind, lighter sea breeze of around eight knots filled the Piran bay today, with the wind dropping later in the afternoon. The race officer Bojan Gale decided for two more races for each of the groups - gold, silver and women.
We wished for more wind and we got it! After the proper warm-up in the gentle sea breeze on the first two days of our Junior World Championship it was time for some action. The NE bora wind came as a refreshment, it cooled the air a bit, and provided great sailing conditions in steady 13-18 knots, in the outer loop gusting even up to 25 kts, with waves that offered great downwind surfing to the more experienced crews.
Today’s second racing day began similar to yesterday’s. The start was initially scheduled for 1pm, but since the sea breeze was late again, the AP flag went down at around half past 12. The three fleets sailed to the racing course, positioned a bit deeper in the Piran bay than yesterday.
The R.C. could hardly wish for better conditions for the opening day of the 470 Junior World Championship here in Portorož, Slovenia. The sailors finished three races in nice sea breeze of maximum around 11 knots and averaging around 6-8, with a wind dropping significantly in the last race.
