International Jury

The 470 is being used for the 2011 Universiade for racing in both a fleet racing and team racing format. The Universiade is a multisport event for students. China is hosting the 26th University Games at Shenzen, near to Hong Kong from 15-21 August. Access to Shenzen is direct into Shenzen International Airport or via Hong Kong airport and then by train and road.

Roland Gailliot, the sailing representative of the International University Sports Federation, has advised us to let 470 sailors who are students know it is still possible to enter the sailing events of the World University Games, the 2011 Summer Universiade.

The event is being run on a "pay and play" basis as the Organizing Committee is providing 25 brand news 470s for the fleet racing, and a further 10 new 470s for the team racing. The team racing consists of two boats, and must include at least 1 female and 1 male per team.

The Entry fee is approximately EUROS 30 per day including accommodation, food, entry fee and boat charter. Entry is open to students who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age on 1 January 2011. Entries must be made by 12 July 2011. Personal sponsorship is permitted. Students must enter through their University Sports Federation.

About the 2011 Universiade

The 26th Summer Universiade was awarded to the city of Shenzhen at the FISU Executive Committee meeting prior to the 2007 Winter Universiade in Torino. Other candidates were Kazan (RUS), Koashiung (TPE), Murcia (ESP) and Poznan (POL).

After Beijing in 2001 (summer) and Harbin in 2009 (winter), the Universiade will once more return to China as the city of Shenzhen was successfull in its bid for the 2011 Summer Universiade. On the southern tip of China, on the Hong-Kong border, Shenzhen has been the fastest growing Chinese city for the last thirty years. The population of 13 million occupies an area of 2020 sqkm. Shenzhen’s strategic location is a great advantage for business and trade. Its many industries benefit from a very dense transport network and considerable investment interest. The high technology sector has rapidly become the driver of the local economy. Trade with Hong-Kong is another of Shenzhen’s main resources. The two cities have concluded a favoured partner agreement. In the last eight years since Hong-Kong has returned to Chinese sovereignty, business between the two cities has doubled.
